Designs of the Desert - Coachella’s Finest

Written by Cassidy Ratner

Influencers and celebrities alike prepare for a grand showcase of their style; Coachella. The music festival located in Indio, California, has gradually become not only about music, but about the carefully thought out and abstract outfits as well. Los Angeles and New York’s finest migrate to the desert for a weekend filled with lavish pool parties, hit performers, and brand sponsored events. Although it was once socially acceptable to throw on a pair of cowboy boots and a crochet top based off of a look on pinterest, the stakes have been raised and so have the expectations. Celebrities and influencers aim to rival their previous looks with an even more abnormal and unseen getup than the year before. However, Coachella 2022 was quite the exception.

According to Page Six, Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner were ranked ninth best out of the sixty one best celebrity outfits of the festival. Instead of wearing wild bodysuits covered in sparkles and busy patterns like many of their runners up, Bieber and Jenner decided to take much more simple approaches. Bieber is pictured sporting a traditional white tank top with blue accents and plain blue jeans, while Jenner is seen in black leather pants paired with a simple black tank top. By wearing such everyday looks that normally would never have stood out on the streets of LA, they most certainly stood out amongst other celebrities’ getups. Harry Styles, being one of them, made an unforgettable performance with an even more unforgettable outfit. His voice shone alongside his Gucci rainbow jumpsuit covered in sequins. An even more daunting look was seen on Megan Thee Stallion, in a Dolce & Gabbana shiny silver bodysuit made up of carefully designed cutouts and rated fifth best.

Large fashion brands have taken advantage of Coachella’s increasing emphasis on fashion by capitalizing on its brand. H&M has been a sponsor of the festival since 2009, which allowed them to implement a shop on the festival site. They were then able to sell clothes that matched up with Coachella’s most up and coming trends. Similarly, ShopBazaar held a pop-up store at Coachella’s festival in 2015. Their poolside event attracted big name guests as they sold big name brands throughout the duration of the festival.

Although Coachella is advertised as a weekend to get away, relax, and enjoy the performances of a lifetime, the serenity of the heat is overridden by the social pressures of wearing and being photographed in a never before seen look. This year, celebrities such as Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber were able to make the greatest statement by doing the exact opposite. With the help of the scope of their influence, the looks appeared just as groundbreaking as the crazy and innovative outfits beside them.
