Remi Bader: Creating Social Change through Social Media

Written By Erin Abramowicz

The process of finding fame has changed greatly over the last two decades with the emergence of popular social media apps like TikTok and Instagram. These apps have provided a platform for many creators, entrepreneurs, and influencers. They have also helped reinforce the concept of overnight fame – this is exactly what happened to Remi Bader. The NYC-based model and content creator – who boasts 477,000 followers on Instagram and a further 2.1 million followers on TikTok – launched to fame after posting realistic clothing hauls and reviews of popular clothing brands on TikTok. She expressed her frustration with a lack of quality, inclusive products. In an interview with E! News, she shared that it all started when she was let go from her job at Tidal.

“…My dad gave me the idea of looking into modeling agencies to be a curve or plus size model. I signed with one of them… Although I was super excited, it's still been very slow. So I was still trying to find something to fill my time, and I started TikTok.”

Fame was never truly on Bader’s mind when making her TikToks. Bader revealed in an interview with Glamour that becoming famous was not part of her plan. She questioned if she would ever get used to her new status and explained that it felt surreal because her rise to internet fame happened so quickly (Yaptangco, Ariana).

Bader’s fast rise to fame has allowed her to become a voice for size inclusion in the fashion industry and given her new opportunities to use her voice to promote body positivity. She has modeled for Aerie’s #BeReal campaign and has partnered with Victoria’s secret as a brand ambassador. She has also walked the runway for Veronica Beard. Most recently, she has partnered with REVOLVE to launch her own line, Remi x REVOLVE, which is devoted to offering trendy, fashionable pieces with inclusive sizing (Dall’Asen, Nicola). However, with all of her fame and success, there have been difficult moments.

Remi is no stranger to being candid. Her openness and genuine personality keep her followers coming back to her page again and again for style tips and fashion inspiration. However, her realness extends further than just fashion. Remi has been very open about the not-so-great parts of her rise to fame. She admits to feeling the pressures of success.

“I definitely feel like I owe everyone something in a way and I really feel like my job now is to be there for everyone…there are going to be times when I don't feel as good: I'm tired, I just need to give myself time to relax.”

She also revealed that despite feeling this way, her TikTok fame and her fanbase has been inspiring to her:

“…TikTok is this amazing community of people. My whole community is just people hyping each other up and making each other feel good about things, giving each other advice, commenting on each other's comments, trying to help each other.”

Remi Bader’s incredible rise to fame and style icon status demonstrates the power of social media to inspire social change and create connections between creators and their audience. Bader’s relatable videos have helped to create conversation surrounding inclusivity in the fashion industry and the quality of inclusive products. She calls on brands to be mindful of different body types when creating their products and to join her in actively spreading body positivity.
