The Annual Showcase: The Oscars

Written by Cassidy Ratner

There is no better time for designers to showcase their newest customizations than the red carpet for the Oscars. With the eyes of millions critiquing and praising their choice of attire, celebrities must choose a look that satisfies an array of viewers watching from their living rooms. This year, the red carpet’s show stopping designers, worn by celebrities such as Jessica Chastain, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Lupita Nyong'o, have strayed from simplicity and taken an abstract approach to an almost hundred year old tradition.

Jessica Chastain, the award winner for best leading actress for her performance in THE EYES OF TAMMY FAYE, was also awarded the winner of best dressed according to the Cosmopolitan article, “The 24 Best- and Worst-Dressed Celebs at the 2022 Oscars”. Chastain chose an attention grabbing dress designed by Gucci, with an array of pink and purple sequins and ruffles along the train. Her red carpet look correlates with her character’s stylistic choices during the movie, with dramatic makeup and brightly colored outfits. Chastain stays true to her role and is well deserving of both titles earned this year.

Another striking yet well executed dress is worn by nominee for best adapted screenplay, Maggie Gyllenhaal. Gyllenhaal wears a black piece by Schiaparelli covered in gold accents. It appears to be designed in the shape of the letter T, with a sharp cutoff and defined off the shoulder sleeves. The dress radiates power, as does her directorial debut, THE LOST DAUGHTER, which portrays the struggle of a woman’s early motherhood.

Renowned actress, Lupita Nyong’o, does not shy away from making a statement in her choice of attire at this year’s red carpet. Nyong’o showcases a metallic gold Prada dress that catches the eye of anyone present. The dress quite literally pops out at the audience, with gold strands and accents fraying from the dress. Complementing the dress, her hair is worn in an extravagant updo. Nyong’o’s look was further publicized as her raw reaction was caught on camera following the incident between Will Smith and Chris Rock. As image’s of Nyong’o’s shocked face circle the internet, her look has gotten the recognition that it well deserves.
It was not only women that made bold statements with their Oscar attire this year. Actors such as Timothée Chalamet and Kodi Smit-McPhee sported untraditional suits as they made their appearance on the red carpet. Chalamet’s Louis Vuitton sparkling black suit and Smit-McPhee’s identical Tiffany blue Bottega Veneta sport coat, pants, and shirt set them both apart from other nominees. Their elegant yet daunting outfits not only gained them recognition on the stage, but in the fashion world as well.
