As February unfolds, a month dedicated to honoring, celebrating, and commemorating Black history, I am eager to shine a spotlight on some remarkable local small businesses here in the heart of Ann Arbor. But before we dive into the stories and offerings of these gems that are just a block away, let's take a moment to talk about the origins of Black History Month.
Initiated by the visionary historian Carter G. Woodson, this month-long celebration was intentionally placed in February. It was intentional as it aligned with the birthdays of two influential figures in American history: Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. This month serves as a platform to amplify Black voices, foster and sustain awareness, and celebrate the integral role and beauty of black history.
As you stroll down State Street during your everyday errands to Target or Chipotle, take a detour to Auntie Dellas! Located to the left of Pitaya, this Black-owned and Woman-owned business immediately captured the attention of my friend and I during our impulsive shopping run during finals week. This beauty supply and gift store, curated by the warm-hearted owner Sheena, offered a welcoming and delightful experience to both of us. Sheena shared the importance of creating a space where BIPOC beauty lovers in Ann Arbor could feel a sense of belonging. From scented candles to matching jewelry, African beauty products to Black history/art pieces, and winter accessories—Auntie Dellas is a treasure trove of unique finds. The cool-colored Michigan scarf showcased on the cover page, my personal favorite, has become a staple in my winter wardrobe, standing out as the most comfortable and warm scarf I've ever owned. To all of those who know me hear about my love for this scarf, as a fellow Michiganger who has struggled finding a warm, good quality, and cute scarf most of her life. and the best thing yet, it’s Michigan colors!
Now, let's take a trip to OneDNA, a Black, Women & Queer owned-and-operated small business on Maynard Street. Their inclusive wardrobe essentials and mission-driven graphics program contributes to food banks and other charitable causes, which immediately made my heart warm when I first shopped there. With features in top fashion publications like American Vogue and Highsnobiety, OneDNA is a beacon of style and substance for small businesses. Their durable tote bags with uplifting messages, as featured on the cover, are not only high-quality (as shared to me by my close friends) but also make for thoughtful gifts. For all your shopping needs, from essentials to having to shop for your friends of all genders, OneDNA offers a one-stop destination that goes beyond fashion!
So, this February, as we celebrate Black history, let's also celebrate the vibrant stories, creativity, and resilience of our local Black-owned businesses right here in Ann Arbor. Each purchase becomes a small but meaningful way to contribute to their narratives and ensure their continued empowerment.
Happy Black History Month everyone :) - Maryam
